The Gravel Rally: A mental battle with a surprise result!
Просмотров 15 тыс.Месяц назад
I travelled to north Wales to take part in the Gravel Rally, an off-road adventure put on by the organisers of Pan Celtic rally. Though I've not ridden the Pan Celtic, I was drawn to this event by a sense it would be fun and friendly. The PC crew are no corporate entity and the lever of banter amongst organisers and riders was testament to this. The route was really tough; long, looooooong time...

lovely bum
That video cracked me up! Literally laughed out loud. You guys make a great team, thank you for sharing!
You got to do this again but with a time frame goal. Gravel bike for the win.👍🏻
That water looks cold...! Great video - thanks for sharing! Are you clipping in to your pedals, or using flat pedals? I guess the latter is nicer when you have to walk sections, but clipping in is better for riding?
Makes me want to get out on an adventure! 😊
Nuclear power station... Not Hydroelectric. It is being decommissioned, and (I think) it will be buried in slate as this is cheaper than properly decommissioning it :(
Any chance you could publish your GPX of the route as the scenery looks fantastic.
It's nice to go your own pace, especially if you are usually the slow one like me. Although if it's a short one, it's kinda fun to try and keep up.
I took an optional singletrack section on a bikepacking trip last week, and it was very muddy, rooty, and with a bunch of downed trees that we had to lift our bikes over. It was a blast, but definitely not what we thought we were going to encounter. It was a super fun trip! I can thank you two for inspiring me to get out there. Good to see you're at it again.
Very nice to see Laura again
Always!
nice views.
Are you sure you're in Wales, because I haven't seen a single sheep ?😜
Do you mind if ask if you followed CyclingUK's Traws Eryri or was it your own route? Looks amazing whatever!
It’s the Cycling Uk route
What is the deal with the full size tea kettle? Is that a Brit thing, too posh to use the Toaks titanium pot?
Not sure what you mean. Both Laura and I use small titanium pots to cook in - that double as cups
I like this apart from the camping bit, this old body 70 just cannot fall asleep on hard ground no more. 5 star hotels with a room too myself, sometimes I'll rough it in a 4 star.
I have a VERY fancy sleeping mat and sleeping bag and that really helps!
Try an ultra comfort sleeping pad. They are pricy but provide warmth and comfort.
Have you considered bikecamping Hadrian's Wall. You would have two big opportunities to dip in the water East side and finally the West side. there are videos of others who have ridden it and wild camped along the way just off the wall area. It seems a really cool ride. Logistics would be one aspect to overcome, possibly having a vehicle on each side. Anyway, just an idea. Your videos and experiences are great. Thanks for all your shared adventures :-)
Great idea, I’ll look into that. I do love UK adventures ☺️ Thank you!
Wat is het toch leuk om naar jullie avontuur te kijken
Nice trip out as always ! Come on then , who's on the best bike choice ? 🚴♂️
Well… Laura said she’d rather be on a gravel bike due to the road segments. But that if you weren’t a mountain biker or confident, you could find the gravel bike tricky on some segments
Its all about the views
Is that pink thing on your chest a hiplock? Trail looks fab!
Yes, it is. Sure is!
Thanks for getting these videos out so quickly! Perfect timing for my trip this week. I think you had better weather than we're going to get though! Never mind!
Yeah we are really blessed! Hope you have fun regardless
Which bike was the right bike for this trip, Gravel or Mountain?
For me, gravel. Laura said she’d rather have been on a gravel bike because of all the road sections
M o r n i n g !
☀️ 🏴 Quinoa & Cauliflower ?? Looked like vacuum packed wood shavings, garnished with twigs ! :)
😂
OMG - Those VIEWS!!!😮
What a lovely video Juliet, the scenery was to die for and you girls looked like you were having a lot of fun.
Can't beat being clean, not digging a hole for me morning dump etc., etc....camp sites for me. 'Ull' east yorkshire.
thank you , i found a portable shower in a bag a water is a trick I found might help you
Beautiful scenery!
Can you come and do mine please x.
Pro tip for such adventures: create a profile on your bike computer and leave out speed + average and just enjoy the ride at your pace. Then you won't feel preasure by numbers in your head. You can look it up afterwards... I found it made me much more relaxed and I'm able to take in the environment better. 😉
Brutal, but awesome day on a bike, ever!!!
Totally!
Own pace is best Jules! Whether it's cycling, walking or --- whatever, own pace
How much a month is that program and also it links with real routes on Strava??
As long as all riders are at peace with going at their own pace, and there's no feeling of shame or blame for being slower, it makes a lot of sense! It's just important to remember to let your slower friends also have a break at the meetup point. (My least favorite thing is catching up with a fast group, and they've all been resting and recovering but once the slow group arrives they immediately want to push off again.)
Absolutely! We have all been that person at some point
Super om jullie te volgen in jullie avontuur in Wals
Keto lowcarb ..! Read about it …Chris Froome have done it I live on keto diet ..I am cycling…maybe 2000 kilometers at the week
It’s not for me but each to their own
😂 phonetically its roughly Trowse - fun - eth.
yeah, gravel. Ugh.
M o r n i n g !
That was a really useful overview of what the trail's like, thank you! I also love a campsite when bikepacking (can't beat a shower at the end of a long day). And a pub. 🙂 I've done a fair bit of bikepacking in groups, and despite a strong preference in those groups for riding together socially, climbing at your own pace seems to be a pretty unanimous preference! 💯
A mechanical you just can’t handle, the cars are playing up. 😂😂😂. Oh and chamois is your best friend so educate that rider immediately. You need to back pack more often.
Don’t talk crap. Need to bikepack more 😆 this ain’t my first rodeo! And it’s up to the person riding to decide on what they wear to ride
Hey why not have a sugar fix after a climb, you have expended a fair amount of energy going up hill. Dentists etc probably would not agree .
for climbs you need to have technique
Yeah I literally started riding the day before yesterday so I have no idea about any of this 🙄
I agree with riding at your own pace is best. 🙂
a smokey camp fire gets rid of Scottish midges alternatively light up a cigarette ..dont know if it will work in Wales but it worked in the 80's in Scotland..I was not a smoker but the adults were .... yes ride your own pace great idea
Speed bump..... 'Ull' east yorkshire.
I think it depends on if you are the strong climber or the not so strong climber. If I am the strong climber, then I am totally fine with going my pace up the climb and waiting at the top. If I’m the not so strong climber, I find myself feeling that I have to go harder so the stronger person isn’t waiting too long (even though I have absolutely no problem waiting when I’m the stronger climber…why is that?). I also feel like I shouldn’t stop until I’m at the top. I’m trying to get over that, but it’s tricky.
gravel doesn't have good geometry for climbs it is also limited by tire clearance
It's a beautiful place Cody y Brenin. We had our honeymoon there 🙂
how lovely!
Hav u done the Pennine Bridleway 85% proper off road and 170 miles love to see vids on that.. 👍
I haven't but I would love to!
